This is a step-by-step guide on how to properly set up and use the GoPro HD Hero 3: Black Edition. Use this guide to change resolution settings, field of view, framerate, color temperature, and to activate and use the devices WiFi capabilities as well as how to add attachments.

  • Prep the GoPro for shooting
    • Open up the side door and insert your mirco SD card into the device.
    • Power up the device by holding the front button next to the lens.
    • If applicable, enable wifi by holding the pressing and holding the wifi button on the side of the camera until a blue light blinks on the front of the camera.
      • This light will constantly blink to indicate that it is emitting a wifi signal.
  • Enter the GoPro settings menu
    • Tap the power button on the front to enter the menu.
    • Press the power button to cycle through the menu until you see an image of a wrench
    • Press the record button on the top of the device on the wrench icon to enter the settings menu
  • Change your framerate / resolution and FOV settings
    • The first menu page in the settings menu has an icon with a camera in the top right and a rectangle with arrows inside as well as your current resolution, framerate and FOV data below. Press the record button to change these values
      • At the Res setting, press the record button to enter the Resolution settings and navigate using the power button. Press the record button to choose a setting
        • Note, if you plan on stabilizing footage in post, shoot at the highest resolution possible. 2.7k cin would be a great choice for 24p, just be careful with the 17:9 aspect ratio
      • At the FPS setting, press the record button to enter the Framerate settings and navigate using the power button. Press the record button to choose a setting
      • At the FOV setting, press the record button to enter the Field of view settings and navigate using the  power button to choose wide, medium or narrow. For this video we are going to keep it on wide.
  • White balance and Protune
    • Scroll to capture settings and press the record button to enter.
      • Scroll to Protune and press the record button to activate. This will allow you to film flat for color grading post.
      • Scroll over to White Balance. Scroll to your desired color temperature using the power button. Select by pressing the record button.
      • Select RAW if you plan on color correcting your footage.
        • Note, shooting RAW will take up the most space on your memory card and requires a slightly modified post workflow
  •  Previewing your shot on a Smartphone or Tablet
      • Scroll to Wireless Controls and select using the record button.
        • Scroll down and select GoPro App.
  • Download the GoPro App on your device.
    • Press the Wifi button on the side of the camera and make sure the blue light is blinking on the front of the camera
    • Search for wifi networks on your device and find FMVD-GoPro-001.
    • Type in the password DrexelWestphal.
    • Open up the GoPro app and click connect+control to preview your shot.
      • Note, there will be a few second delay between the GoPro and your device.
  • Using Attachments
    • Attach the waterproof housing by placing the camera in and latching the top.
      • Unscrew the base. Choose your accessory – for this video we will be using the suction cup mount.
      • Slide the pins into the mount and replace the screw to tighten it.
        • Note, you can use this mount for a variety of creative shots.
